Being a soldier is mostly a choice nowadays, at least in the civilized countries that are not at war. Things can change on a dime, however, especially if another country decides to invade and cause some havoc. Having a career in the military is possible in peacetime as well, although it’s definitely not as relaxing as you might think. There are many duties that need to be performed even if there are no mortar shells falling on your location.
Long Gone Days is a top-down role-playing game with visual novel elements and gorgeous artwork, in which you play the role of a young man trying to find a purpose for himself. The whole thing takes place in some kind of dystopian world inspired by various sci-fi novels, although the actual geopolitical map is more or less the same as in reality. Hence, it should feel a bit more real than most sci-fi productions.
The plot revolves around a young man by the name of Rourke, who’s a soldier from a very young age. In fact, the military life is all he knows, which is why he is so overly excited about leaving on a special mission on the surface. He is also a sniper, which means that most of his time is spent watching from afar and taking the targets out one by one.
The actual gameplay is quite straightforward, although it’s a bit more engaging than in most top-down RPGs. As such, besides the turn-based combat used for party encounters, Rourke can also eliminate enemies in a great little mini-game that has you using a scope and finding the targets around the map. It’s not difficult, and it barely requires any skill at all, but at least it makes you feel a lot closer to the action.
Speaking of which, the artwork and the general visual style has a lot to say on the overall atmosphere of the game, in a good way. In fact, the artwork is absolutely sublime when it comes to character design, at least if you are a fan of the anime style. The isometric landscapes are quite nice as well, although they are obviously much less detailed.
In the end, Long Gone Days seems to excel at everything, which is rare for a top-down RPG of such low caliber, at least in regards to production and studio size. However, you could actually get completely swallowed by the intriguing universe and the compelling characters.
