Strategy games are usually designed to be as replayable as possible, because the real fun begins once you are very familiar with the gameplay mechanics and you can start to apply your very own tactics. Granted, not every game gets the mechanics right, because most get very boring after a few hours, especially if you decide to play a few skirmish matches.
Little Kingdom 2 is a very basic strategy game in which your goal is quite simple: gather resources, trade them and expand your territory. There are a few other options as well, such as bribing and gifting, but they are pretty badly explained and it may take a while to understand how they work, or if they are worth the bother. Granted, the general gameplay mechanics are pretty repetitive as well.
You start with a tower and a few basic resources that can be used to build more facilities. However, you are practically forced to build only one type of facility, since anything else means an early death for your economy. There are few buildings to begin with anyway, so the gameplay gets dull and repetitive in a rush, especially in single player, given the weak and predictable AI.
The demo does not allow you to enjoy single battles, unfortunately, which sound much more fun than the scenarios you are forced to go through in the story mode. Hence, you should be able to customize the maps and decide things like resource availability, terrain and general size. Even so, the mechanics are unchanged, which means that it’s pretty difficult to get excited about any of the modes.
On top of it all, the game is very basic from a technical point of view as well. This normally wouldn’t be a problem if the rest of the mechanics would allow you to have fun and forget about everything else, but this is not the case here. Hence, there’s nothing to distract you from the low-resolution tiles that make up the entirety of the map.
While Little Kingdom 2 is not terrible from a conceptual point of view, it needs a lot more content and better gameplay mechanics in order to keep the players engaged for more than a few minutes. In its current state, the game wouldn’t be able to satisfy even the most casual strategy fans out there, unfortunately.
