People usually say that the pen is mightier than the sword, but that saying rarely comes to mind in RPGs when you have to face an acid-drooling troll incapable of speech. Hence, actual swords are much more useful in a dungeon, as is chainmail and a stuffed spellbook. On the other hand, educational video games can be a bit more literal on the subject, especially if their goal is to teach the players a thing or two.
Letter Quest: Remastered is a turn-based role-playing game with very basic gameplay mechanics and barely any violence at all. In fact, its purpose is mainly to help you develop your language skills and have a bit of fun while you’re at it. There are no vicious monsters trying to dismember you, only colorful creatures that attack you with words and clever spelling.
The story puts you in the role of two grim reapers by the name of Grimm and Rose, although they are much more adorable than what you would expect a death bringer to look like. Your goal is to clear level after level and defeat every monster that stands in your way, while visiting a variety of interesting locations. There’s not much more to it than that, but it’s enough to provide you with a good time.
To make matters more interesting, it is possible to collect and buy nice things after you gain enough currency. This is achieved by hoarding the gems you find throughout the levels, and it’s quite easy to do so, since they are everywhere. It is also possible to upgrade your books and buy better potions, in case you ever find yourself in need of a boost when a tougher enemy gives you a hard time.
Visually, the game is about as cheerful as possible, even if the things depicted on screen involve grim reapers, dungeons and all sorts of wannabe monsters. As the term “Remastered” states in the title, the graphics have been upgraded for modern times, which means that the game supports full-HD resolutions and larger textures. The sound is nice as well, but you’ll barely have any time to pay attention to it.
In the end, Letter Quest: Remastered manages to help you learn or thing or two while playing, which is exactly what an educational video game needs to do. It comes with more than enough levels to keep you entertained for a couple of hours.
