Gamers love to engage in long and tactical battles if they don’t end up bored after a few minutes, which is why there are so many great TBS games out there. Even if single battles can take up to a few hours, it’s always a blast to see your strategies in action, especially after you manage to build the desired army and you also have an opponent who’s in the same skill league as you.
Legions of Tyrandel is a strategy game with CCG elements and turn-based battles in which you have to defeat your enemies by having the best deck and the best field tactics at the same time. In essence, you can think of it as a combination of Hearthstone and Heroes of the Might and Magic, because although you get to build card decks, the units you choose for your deck must then be placed on the battlefield and used in combat.
The two sides start on opposite sides of a river, which is a bit of a cliche, but the full game may contain more maps as well. As such, your goal is to destroy the enemy base and defeat the army by passing over one of the available bridges and carefully attacking the enemy forces. Everything takes place in turns, so each unit can be moved independently as long as it has enough action points to spare.
Since the combat is much more hands on than in a classic deck building game, that also means that the battles take up a lot more of your time. Each unit must be moved and placed accordingly on the battlefield, almost like in chess. You can also place other buildings and cast special abilities, so there’s usually quite a bit of thinking you have to do before each round is over.
As for the rest of the game, it must be mentioned that there are still quite a few bugs to watch out for, some of which can be quite annoying. On top of that, the user interface needs a lot of work, especially when it comes to how you play the cards and how you move the units on the map. A tutorial would certainly be nice, or at least some hints and tooltips.
In the end, there’s certainly potential here, but a lot more work is needed for the game to be polished enough to be worthy of the current market. Hence, if you want to lend a hand, you can vote for the game on Steam Greenlight, or support the developers by backing their Kickstarter project.
