Strategy games seem a tad neglected lately, even if there are still developers trying to revive the genre. It would seem like everyone tries to simplify things a tad too much in certain regards, which is why those who truly want a challenge may not find what they are looking for. Obviously, there are still great games out there, such as the Europa Universalis series or Crusader Kings.
Legends of Callasia is a strategy game that tries to provide you with a unique experience in the genre, mainly by combining a variety of different elements. While the overall game looks a lot like Risk, the actual gameplay includes turn-based concepts, as well as CCG elements and an emphasis on multiplayer. Everything is designed to be as quick as possible, which means that every player makes his moves at the same time.
Conquest is the main activity both in the single player campaign and in multiplayer. In short, you have to conquer regions, build production facilities around the map, and hire troops and heroes to carry on your war. The goal is to occupy the entire map, although a few other modes are planned as well. So far, the game is pretty early in the development stage, but everything seems to be working smoothly.
Although you are allowed to build structures and hire a variety of interesting units, it is worth noting that the combat is auto-resolved, which means that you do not get to interact with your army. Instead, you just look at the monitor while the outcome is decided based on the number of troops you have and their power. The battles are split into two different phases as well, namely missile and melee, to add a bit of excitement to the formula.
In the graphics and interface department, everything actually looks sharp and clean, even in this early stage. Sure, the combat backgrounds get very repetitive after a while and the buttons are missing tooltips in most cases, but everything else is spot on. Even the artwork is mesmerizing and colorful, which includes the bonus cards, the heroes and the actual maps on which the action takes place.
All things considered, Legends of Callasia is on the right path to success, as long as the developers iron out some of its imperfections and annoyances. It’s a bummer that you cannot interact with your troops during the combat, but given the fact that the central idea of the game revolves around speed and quick matches, this is probably the right move.
Note: You can help the developers make Legends of Callasia a reality by donating in their Kickstarter project, as well as by voting for it on Steam Greenlight.
What's new in Legends of Callasia Demo 1.0.2.21:
- We've just added a brand new 4-player map to Legends of Callasia called Blackclaw Gulf!
- On the distant Eastern reaches of Alyssia, the narrow broken lands of Sumar separate the Lake of Sumar from the briny Blackclaw Gulf, famed for the massive black crabs that form the basis of the local diet. Blackclaw Gulf serves as the key waterway through the local Kingdoms, and as such has a long and bitter past, one that has lined her black-pebbled shores with the wrecks of generations.
