Some pop culture currents left a deep mark on our society, since we are constantly seeing throwbacks in one form or another. Hippies and flower power were a thing once upon a time, and so were huge afros and disco music. Movies have periods like this as well, as do video games, and the two are often combined into something quite exciting.
Lazer Cops is a concentrated vial of everything that made the 80s great, especially explosions and buddy cops that partner up to take on hundreds of bad guys by themselves. As the name clearly implies, lasers are a quintessential part of gameplay as well, since the main gimmick revolves around two cop cars with a laser tether between them that can be used to eviscerate enemy vehicles.
Naturally, at least two players are needed for the game to make sense, because you cannot keep track of two vehicles at once. Hence, co-op is a must, and it’s preferable to use at least one controller and the keyboard. The tether becomes dangerous if other obstacles hit it, so good coordination is a must if you want to survive the levels.
The cars also come with a boost that allows them to accelerate whenever you need to get out of a sticky situation, but synchronization is again very important. You can make the tether longer by surviving and scoring points, but this can turn out to be a problem as well, because it’s easier to snag on obstacles with a longer laser. On the other hand it also makes it simpler to destroy multiple enemies at once.
As for the graphics, the developers managed to successfully recreate the classic 80s style using a lot of bright colors and dark backgrounds, which is great news if you are a retro fan. It can be difficult to see things sometimes, but then again it’s not as important as in an actual racing game to see where you’re going.
In the end, Lazer Cops is not yet complete, but it shows tremendous promise if the rest of the game is going to be just as fun. Thus, fans of local co-op games should definitely keep an eye on it to see how it turns out in the end.
