Creating an immersive fantasy world is never easy, especially in video games, given the fact that people get to be part of the action in a much more personal manner. However, sometimes it’s enough for the players to feel like they have the freedom to do as they please, even if the characters or the story as a whole fail to impress.
Last Dream: World Unknown is a retro top-down RPG in which you take control over a party of heroes and use their combined skills to make a difference in the events that unfold over the course of the story. The game features turn-based combat and a fairly engaging exploration component, so there should be plenty to do, even across multiple playthroughs.
To begin with, there are multiple classes to choose from, including classics such as fighter, thief or ranger. You can create a party of four and carefully customize their skills in the beginning to obtain the desired battle experience, and there are hundreds of combinations to play with. There are also many side quests and class-specific quests that extend the experience, especially if you like to explore.
Since your only tasks throughout the adventure include walking and picking the desired action during combat, the controls are very simple and to the point. The interface is pretty classic as well, although the lack of mouse input can be a bit of a bother when you have to deal with menus. As far as the combat is concerned, the random encounters are always tricky and enjoyable, but they can get repetitive sometimes.
The graphics are worth some praise too, especially in terms of world design and texture quality. Even if everything you see is in low-resolution, the tiles are very colorful and detailed, which helps a lot with the atmosphere. Each monster you encounter is unique and intriguing, so it’s always a thrill to see what kind of creature stands in your way.
All things considered, Last Dream: World Unknown should hit the sweet spot for RPG lovers, and even more so if you are a retro fan as well. It can be a bit shallow and predictable sometimes, but then again it’s to be expected in the genre.
