Wargames are one of the most popular genres out there when it comes to strategy and tactical flicks, especially if they allow players to take full control over the forces at their disposal. It’s difficult to present players with a fully realistic experience, on the other hand, because there are so many variables when it comes to combat. On top of that, it’s even more difficult to do so if you also aim to provide people with a visual representation of the battles.

Land Doctrine is an interesting strategy game that allows you to take full control over your forces and even be in charge of their training before actually starting a battle. Customization is a key factor throughout the game, because you have a plethora of ways to change the way your tanks work and behave on the battlefield, as well as how the infantry tackles armored units in various environments.

Another inviting feature comes in the form of randomly generated maps, which keep the experience fresh even after multiple sessions. The goal of each round is to conquer the maps by attacking and winning the enemy cities. Naturally, the more towns you have under control, the more units you can produce and train, which makes it easier to overpower your enemies.

As mentioned before, customization is a very big part of the game, because you can develop a variety of new parts for your tanks, including engines, suspensions or weapons. It’s also important to remember to train your soldiers, otherwise they won’t rise to the challenge when the moment comes. Vehicle production is costly as well, so it helps if you do it as efficiently as possible and you have plenty of cities under your control to house the factories.

Lastly, the graphics are not particularly impressive, but then again they do not affect the experience too much in a wargame anyway. You can at least zoom in and out, as well as pan the camera around the map, but there’s very little to see, unfortunately. Not much can be said about the sound effects either, so it’s a good thing that most of the time you are too busy to notice these things.

Land Doctrine is clearly not designed for casual players or newcomers to the genre, since it features some really hardcore components and not many explanations. In fact, veterans might find it difficult to work things out sometimes as well, so a guide of some sort would be most welcome.
