Being a child is easy in many regards, but it can also be extremely challenging sometimes, depending on the situation. Hence, some kids have an easy time making friends and having fun with them, while others are not as popular on the playground. It’s not the end of the world, on the other hand, since most people do not need more than one or two good friends anyway.
Kimmy is an interesting visual novel that puts you in the role of Dana, a young girl who lives in Massachusetts around the late 1960s. The game is not impressive when it comes to the artwork, but the story is interesting enough to keep you engaged, not to mention sad sometimes. You can also view multiple routes if you decide to play the game more than once.
It all starts when Dana stumbles into a little girl by the name of Kimmy, who appears to be lost and lonely in her own neighborhood. For some reason Dana decides to take Kimmy under her protection and act as a babysitter, as well as spend time with her around the neighborhood. Thus, the two friends play together and share things about their lives and families.
Although the game looks like it might be a good choice for younger audiences, the truth is that some of the subjects it approaches are quite mature. Thus, Dana gets to find out more about Kimmy’s family along the way, and there are a few conversations that involve subjects like death and bad words. Even so, there’s no gore or explicit content that might traumatize you.
Speaking of which, the artwork is a bit too sketchy and simple sometimes, which makes it difficult to get in the proper mood. The characters are not particularly detailed either, so don’t expect to create too many memories in this regard. Even so, the story is interesting enough to keep you engaged, especially since every now and again you can make choices that change the story a little bit.
In the end, Kimmy is a unique experience when it comes to story and the dialog, but it’s a bit too ugly from a visual point of view. However, you can get over it if you concentrate on the plot and the characters.
