Designing an adventure game is not an easy task, especially if you want to impress your audience and tell a nice story in the process. However, it’s all about creativity and having a rich imagination, because the rest is not that important if the players are fully engaged by the story and the characters. Granted, it’s still a good idea to have a solid set of gameplay mechanics in place as well.
Kathy Rain is a 2D point & click adventure game that doesn’t look like much at first, but it has the required charisma to keep you engaged for a long time, especially if you enjoy investigating every detail. Even if it uses the same old gameplay mechanics as almost every other game in the genre, the atmosphere, the graphics and the story all work together to generate a memorable experience, at least in the demo.
Speaking of which, the story revolves around a tough girl by the name of Kathy Rain, who just returned to her hometown after being gone for fifteen years or so. The reason she came back was to attend her grandfather’s funeral, but it would seem that there’s more to it than that. Hence, she soon starts investigating the mystery of his illness and a particular incident that caused his vegetative state.
Most of your time is spent examining the environment and looking for clues, but you can also dedicate a lot of your time to having conversations with the characters you meet along the way. Most of the dialogue is self-driven, but you can make your own inquiries as well, or even present various objects to other people and gain information about them. It’s a pretty usual approach in the genre, but it works very well in this case as well.
One of the most striking things about the game is the atmosphere itself, which is actually born out of a combination of music, graphics and level design. Each scene is quite detailed and very moody, which helps a lot with immersion. It truly feels like you are in another place, and that makes it much easier to pay attention to the story.
All things considered, Kathy Rain is mighty interesting, and it deserves a lot of praise for being able to generate such an immersive atmosphere. Hence, if you want to forget about yourself for a while and tackle an interesting mystery at the same time, this could very well be the answer.
