Action-adventure games are all about providing the players with a smooth and entertaining ride, since the levels are usually linear and there are not too many choices one can make along the way. However, with the use of good writing and interesting characters, the journey can be that much more exciting, since it is like being part of a movie.

Kaan: Barbarian's Blade tells the tale of a young warrior by the name of Kaan, who’s about to challenge the might of the resident evil wizard of the realm. Fighting on the good’s side is never easy, on the other hand, since evil always manages to summon a lot more warriors, albeit much weaker and dumber. Using a variety of weapons and his talent for war, Kaan must drive back the forces of darkness and restore order in the realm.

The story is not very complicated either, although there are some more characters involved and the action evolves steadily over the course of the chapters. Hence, it all starts when Queen Xithanna’s lands are attacked by Tothum Siptet, the aforementioned evil sorcerer that terrorizes the realm. Naturally, the young barbarian comes to help and he manages to repel to attack, only to go on the offensive and target the wizard himself once and for all.

The combat is the most important part of the gameplay, since that’s what you’ll be doing for the better part of the game. You can use multiple strikes and take advantage of enemy weaknesses, as long as you do not forget to protect yourself as well. Kaan can use his shield to block incoming attacks, although that means you won’t be able to attack either as long as the guard is up.

There are also various other small items you can pick up along the way, such as insignias and better weapons. Not a lot of emphasis is put on character development and abilities, but that doesn’t mean you cannot learn how to make better use of his skills. Moreover, the third-person point of view allows you to be on top of the situation at all times and always be aware of your surroundings.

In the end, Kaan: Barbarian's Blade is not exactly extraordinary, but there is enough potential in it to keep you entertained for a short while. The simplicity of the combat system and the lack of depth is sure to disappoint sooner rather than later, but the game is worth a try nonetheless, if you are a fan of the genre.
