Although there are many difficult games nowadays as well, one could argue that they are a lot more approachable now than back in the day. Even platformers like Super Mario required patience and dedication in order to pass all the levels, not to mention fast-paced action games or RPGs. However, you can still get the same experience even today, especially if you look in the right places.
Invicta Beam is a first-person shooter that challenges your reflexes and your patience using extremely fast-paced mechanics and over-the-top action in sci-fi environments. The whole thing is presented as a series of different cartridges as well, so the retro vibes are as strong as they can get. On the other hand, the graphics are very modern and very polished, so the mix of elements is definitely tantalizing.
The FPS mechanics are nothing out of the ordinary, so you can quickly find your way around the controls and how to deal with enemies. However, the fast-paced gameplay might require a bit of getting used to, especially since you can die in a matter of seconds and you have to restart the whole level most of the time. There are many enemies around you at all times, so it’s difficult to stay alive when you are attacked from every direction.
Boss fights are very important in the grand scheme of things as well, and they are obviously about as challenging as they can get. Most of them require you to find the right pattern and apply it until you win, but to actually do this you still have to move incredibly fast and avoid any mistakes. Granted, you can also make use of shields and a few other interesting abilities, but they can only do so much to keep you safe.
As far as the graphics are concerned, they are actually the exact opposite of what you would expect from such a game, since they are very good-looking and modern. Every level is unique and very detailed, not to mention all the animations and interesting enemies you face along the way. To top things off, the soundtrack goes very well with the action as well, which is yet another reason to give the game a try.
In the end, Invicta Beam has all the right elements to keep you engaged for a long time, especially since it might take you multiple tries to complete a single playthrough. It also features snappy controls and refined gameplay mechanics.
