Sometimes simplicity is a welcomed part of video games, especially when it comes to casual productions designed to be enjoyed for a few minutes at a time. On the other hand, this doesn’t work for every genre out there, because it’s a lot easier to design a basic match-three game than it is to apply the same school of thought on a role-playing game.
Infinity Saga is a top-down RPG with simple graphics and even simpler gameplay mechanics, in which you play the role of a teenage boy trying to impress the girl he likes. Things get rather hairy along the way, on the other hand, given the fact that a zombie invasion ruins his courting plans. However, all is not lost, since even an apocalypse can serve as a good way to get closer to the one you like.
The game uses the familiar RPG Maker engine, so it obviously looks similar to all the other games developed with it, especially in the graphics department. There’s a bit of exploration included with the game, although the map of the town is fairly small, even if you have access to certain buildings. The story is not as funny as the developers imagined, which means that it gets rather annoying along the way.
The quests feel more like chores than anything else, and there’s apparently a lot of grinding involved in the game which is not good news for anyone. The mechanics revolve around moving around the map and interacting with various objects, while the combat is turn-based as usual. Hence, it gets boring in a rush, even if you are a seasoned grinder.
As mentioned before, the graphics are fairly basic as well, given the fact that RPG Maker was used to develop the game. Hence,. Low-resolution tiles and simple textures are all you can see, which is not usually a problem, except that in this case they get a lot more annoying because you have nothing fun to do. The maps are a tad too small for an RPG that technically encourages exploration.
All things considered, Infinity Saga doesn’t have too many positive aspects, but then again you can still give it a try if you lower your expectations considerably beforehand. The simple mechanics might make it easier for newcomers to get acquainted with the genre.
