There were a few civilizations that left their mark on history, whether through war, or technological advancement. The Roman Empire is a prime example of such a civilization, since it managed to rule over most of Europe and conquer everything that stood its way, as well as provide the world with many useful inventions and majestic buildings that still stand to this day.
Imperium Romanum gives you the opportunity to be a part of their greatness and take the role of a governor over a Roman province, in order to expand it and defend its borders against enemies. Moreover, you also get to command armies on the battlefield and employ a variety of warfare tactics, as well as build structures and keep an eye on the happiness of the population.
In essence, the game is a combination of RTS and economical simulation, because your job is mostly to watch over the city and make sure it has everything it needs, rather than worry about gathering resources. You do, however, have a lot of tactical options on the battlefield and more than enough unit types to see the full force of the empire at play whenever you engage into a conflict.
One interesting gameplay mode included in the title is the History mode, which basically keeps track of a certain timeline as you keep advancing through the years. Thus, you get to witness real events that took place in certain years, as well as try your best to change the course of history, if you are so inclined. Moreover, missions can also be triggered by these events, which require you to complete a variety of tasks in a given time frame.
It should be mentioned that the game features a very good-looking graphic engine, which really inspires life into the majestic Roman settlements. The special effects are particularly pleasant to watch whenever armies clash together, since the units are very nicely rendered and animated, in order to portray a realistic depiction of a battle.
In the end, Imperium Romanum is definitely an improvement over the previous installment, mainly because it brings so many new additions when it comes to gameplay mechanics and the amount of objects you can interact with throughout the game. The campaign mode is also highly entertaining, as are the free-play modes and the skirmishes against the computer players.
