Immortal Souls Demo
Help two vampires fight their way through hordes of hellspawns in this role-playing game with turn-based combat elements. #Role-playing game #Turn-based combat #Vampire game #Immortal #Soul #Vampire
Vampires are quite popular nowadays, whether in movies, TV shows, books, or even video games. However, while games like Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines had a more mature approach to the subject and portrayed the bloodsuckers as corrupt and decadent as regular humans, other creations depict them as demigods, with barely any flaws.
Immortal Souls is a weird combination of role-playing elements, turn-based combat, and match-three mechanics, all of which blend into one somewhat cohesive product. The main characters happen to be vampires as well, just to make things a bit more exciting. Hence, they get to use special vampire abilities on their enemies, which adds more fun to the combat.
Speaking of which, there’s also a story going on in the background, which talks about two guys who are vampires. However, instead of the glamorous life of a vampire, they must hide and fight back against hordes of hell spawns sent to claim their souls. In essence, most of the gameplay is about moving from location to location, trying to defeat the enemies that await you there.
The weird part makes its presence felt during the combat sequences, because although it looks like your regular TBS gimmick, you actually have to match a few symbols in a corner somewhere in order to realize a special attack. Hence, both luck and skill have something to say on the matter, which may or may not sit well with you. A lot of depth flew off the window right from the start, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun.
Visually, the graphic style is unique to say the least, although not in the memorable way. There’s a hint of film noir combined with comic book-style animations, but everything is quite rough and something too obvious. Hence, you can notice the cropped objects placed into the scenery, which is quite distracting sometimes and it hurts the overall atmosphere.
In the end, Immortal Souls never had too much potential to begin with, given the rather simple premise. However, with enough work and dedication, even that could have turned out to be a good game, as long as the developers had put more work into it.
