Some video game concepts seem silly when you think about them, but it’s all about how they are implemented. Hence, there are many ways one can introduce the concept of sneaking around in a stealth game, but not all of them are going to be fun or enjoyable. The same goes for basically everything else, because it’s very important that the experience is unique in some kind of way.

Ian's Eyes wouldn’t be a very interesting game if it weren't for a few intriguing mechanics, but somehow the developers managed to make something that’s been around for decades feel like a new idea. Hence, the game is basically a third-person adventure game with stealth elements, but the way you interact with the characters and the world is pretty interesting.

As such, you play with two characters at once, namely Ian and his helping dog North. Ian is blind, which means that he relies on North in order to navigate and find his way around the environment. Although most of the time you control both of them at once, it’s also possible to separate and use North to explore the surrounding area in order to assess the situation. Moreover, North has a neat set of skills that come in handy in a variety of situations.

Since the dog cannot interact with too many objects, its main purpose is exploration. It’s important that you do not bump into other characters, which by the way are some kind of ghouls, while also checking up on your surroundings and watching out for clues or escape routes. After that, you can attract Ian’s attention by barking, although it’s important that you bark just enough not to alert anyone else of your position.

One of the game’s issues at this point is the fixed camera position, because you switch between angles as you move along and it gets disorienting sometimes. Movement is also rather incremental and not very fluid, which leads to all sorts of navigational issues. There are also a few bugs and inconsistencies to watch for, but nothing’s too broken to make the game unplayable.

In the end, Ian's Eyes has the potential to make a name for itself if the full product comes with a few improvements and fixes. However, the story and the gameplay are interesting enough to keep you engaged right from the start.
