Role-playing games are all but set in stone when it comes to gameplay mechanics and the way they usually play out. Hence, whether it’s a third/first-person RPG like the Gothic or The Elder Scrolls series, or a classic isometric title like Icewind Dale or Planescape: Torment, there’s not a lot of variation on the theme, since the story seems to be the only thing that changes most of the time.
Hero of the Kingdom II is not your typical role-playing game, on the other hand, nor is it a classic point-and-click adventure game either. In fact, it combines the two genres into one and it allows you to experience a unique atmosphere, as well as to follow your own path over the course of an interesting story. Some classic RPG elements are present as well, including quests and the ability to learn new skills along the way.
As such, the story talks about two teenagers who arrive into a fishing village after their own village was destroyed and their parents killed. In order to earn a living, the brother starts running errands for various people, who reward him with food, money, or they even take the time to teach him a new skill. However, after a few days of getting acquainted with the locals, a pirate ship attacks the village and they kidnap your sister, which means that you must go on a journey to find her.
The quests are not very complicated, but they require certain items in order to be completed. Hence, while some locals just want you to deliver some materials to a different corner of the island, other quests require you to bypass certain foes, using lures to distract them, or mercenaries to fight them. From time to time, classic point-and-click mechanics come into play as well, challenging you to find certain objects on the map and add them to your inventory.
Food and rest are also essential, because each action requires a bit of energy as well. In order to sleep, on the other hand, you need to find some food too, to avoid going to bed hungry. As far as the visual quality is concerned, the game uses an isometric perspective to portray the island and the characters. While your character does not actually move in real time on the map, you can click on certain locations to change the scenery when you want to.
While Hero of the Kingdom II may not be your typical RPG, it does have what it takes to keep you invested in the action and pay attention to the story. The gameplay mechanics are unique and they provide you with a lot of freedom when it comes to choosing your next actions.
