Sci-fi video games usually revolve around mindless aliens that suddenly decide to attack Earth, so originality is not the genre’s strong point. On the other hand, there are many unexplored areas when it comes to science fiction, and there are plenty of creative individuals out there to come up with ideas. However, it’s not enough to have a good story if the mechanics are not enjoyable enough.

Hellpoint is an upcoming action-RPG that takes place in space and puts you face-to-face with a variety of awful creatures and challenges you to make good use of your character’s abilities in order to survive. There are three different classes to choose from in the beginning, depending on whether you want to use melee weapons, pistols, or mystic powers that make weapons useless.

The events in the game revolve around a space station that gets hit by some kind of quantum cataclysm, which somehow rips through multiple dimensions and causes all the creatures in range to go crazy after making contact with their alternate selves. On top of that, the space station in question also orbits around a massive black hole that amplifies the effect as well.

As far as the gameplay is concerned, the third-person perspective should be all too familiar to seasoned gamers, especially when it comes to the combat. It would appear that the main character is a bit too slow sometimes, not to mention the fact that the camera does not rotate quickly enough. The attacks have some sort of input lag every now and again, which is not great news in a game that should technically reward good reflexes.

It’s worth noting that you also need to keep an eye on the station’s orbit around the black hole, because it is updated in real time. The closer you are to the event horizon, the more vicious the enemies, which is not good news. This part is not fully integrated into the gameplay yet, but it would be great to see the finished product, because it’s a fairly unique concept.

In the end, Hellpoint is a very exciting game that holds a lot of promise, especially when it comes to the setting and the gameplay itself. It still needs a bit of work in terms of mechanics and combat, but it’s definitely on the right track. Thus, you can support the developers by participating in their Kickstarter campaign.
