Although hacking has been transformed by Hollywood into something explosive and full of suspense, the actual thing is much slower and it features fewer lasers and less sweat. On top of that, there’s also a thing known as ethical hacking, which is practiced by people who try to uncover security flaws in software or web services in order to warn the developers and protect the users.
Hacker Evolution IMMERSION is a new episode in the well-known simulator series, and it comes with a few new additions and changes in regards to gameplay. However, it’s worth noting right off the bat that this is a very early build of the game, which means that it barely features any content and it comes with a decent collection of bugs as well.
In this episode, the story takes you through a variety of interesting scenarios, ranging from the first computer days back in the Soviet era, all the way to the distant future, where technology is almost a part of the human mind. Naturally, the gameplay changes as well, but the essential tactics remain the same, at least when it comes to how you gain access to a server and its contents.
As you might expect, everything revolves around a command-line interface from where you input commands and try to gain access to various devices and computers. The list of available commands is rather short at the moment, but more are going to be added by the time the full game is released. You also have to keep an eye on the gauges that allow you to control your computer’s resources, including CPU power, upload/download speed balance and task priority.
The graphics are nothing to write home about, but then again there are no 3D environments, just a lot of text, a map, and the occasional ASCII drawing. On the other hand, the soundtrack is pretty engaging and nicely chosen for this type of game, but more is needed if the adventure is extended in the full game, because otherwise it would get repetitive in a rush.
All things considered, Hacker Evolution IMMERSION is much more approachable than most hacking sims on the market, and it also looks nice. However, it’s difficult to say how the whole thing is going to turn out, because there’s very little content at the moment to form an opinion.
