The Kind of Death has been angered and thus he plans to unleash his minions upon your realm. With no time to spare, the Lord of Light summons his most trusted warriors to fight his battle for him (duh). And so begins Gunnheim, a game with vikings that obliterate their enemies by using semi-automatic weapons (that unfortunately don’t use battleaxes as ammo).
From a first glance Gunnheim looks pretty good. It seems that low-poly graphics are in this season and for a good reason, they’re kind of appealing. The world in Gunnheim (as seen in the demo) is gloomy with a pinch of hell to bring out the brown and red from the blood and flying body parts.
It’s a well crafted game from most aspects. Animations are fluid, effects are nice and you can’t but move your head to the baddassery that is the soundtrack. They are all core characteristics of a shooter that’s built to be fun and engaging.
Your character moves rather slowly when compared to others in similar games but then again, 180 kg vikings carrying weapons half their size wouldn’t really be all that agile, would they? I can’t decide whether the seemingly low mobility is a good thing or a bad thing but what’s sure is that it really counts when it comes to the difficulty of the game.
Your gun shoots mostly like an AK-47 in Counter Strike 1.6, all over the place, so aiming and luck are crucial. Combine that with the slow factor and you really grind your teeth at times when four or five minions start charging towards you.
There are several things you can appreciate in Gunnheim, such as the fact that as you upgrade your weapon’s firepower, the more recoil it has and it slightly pushes you back a few inches as you fire. Also, bullets naturally slice through enemies if they are hit in certain places and that little piece of realism makes a big difference.
Grab the demo, call a friend or two and see how it turns out.
