Guardians of Graxia is a card-based game based on the famous world of Graxia that will pit the users against a powerful enemy controlled by the AI.
Fantasy battles with card rules sound like a great system until you try it. Many studios and developers have tried their hand at this genre of games, but it’s tough nut to crack. When you also add a board on which you can also move your units, it becomes all the more complicated. Guardians of Graxia does a lot of things right, but it’s also unnecessarily complicated, detracting from the overall value.
The rules of the card game are not all that alien if we compare it with other titles. Basically, your units have determined attack power, which can be enhanced with other spells of skills. It’s all about adding and subtracting. In fact, you might find it rather similar with Hearthstone from Blizzard, but that’s a game without the battlefield.
The demo for Guardians of Graxia only has the first level, which is also supposed to take care of the tutorial portion, but it’s more challenging than you would expect. The problem is that the AI is much better at playing the game than you since it already knows all the cards.
There are some nice abilities, like the bluffing card, which in theory could trick the AI into thinking that you played something with high value, but it never worked. It should have made the units route, but the enemy always calls the bluff and ends up causing me a lot of damage.
Also, the battle seems to be disproportionately in favor of the AI, even if you units seems to be much better. In any case, players will either love the game or hate it, but the overall quality is above board.
The engine is pretty good, but it’s nothing special and the units don’t look too good when the camera move for the close up. The advantage is that the system requirements for Guardians of Graxia are pretty low, so most of the players will be able to run this game at a decent framerate.
