Goetia Demo

Goetia, the practice of invoking angels and demons, a perfect name for a game that’s dark, silent, and very reserved in truly letting you know what it’s actually about. It’s a point and click that aims to challenge you to solve the mystery of Blackwood family, their mystical practices and search for knowledge using dangerous methods.

In the true spirit of point and click games, you will be using your mouse pointer to explore the surroundings and interact with objects. What’s interesting about Goetia is that here you play as a spirit of a girl and as a result, you can observe and interact with an object but you can’t keep it in an inventory. Since you’re a ghost, you can’t really carry stuff around in a backpack.

However, you can posses a given object and move it to wherever you want. This opens the door for a new kind of point and click interaction and it certainly gets you more involved in solving a puzzle. Now, this doesn’t mean that you’ll have to constantly carry stuff and pile it in a room for whenever you might need it but you’ll see what difference this mechanic makes.

Moreover, Goetia focuses a lot on exploration and for this reason, walls are there just to look pretty. You can pass through them and effortlessly make your way around the manor with its very large number of rooms, that is, if there are no magical inscriptions keeping you out.

Goetia has one of the most beautifully eerie graphic designs I’ve come across in a while. There is no compromise to detail. Space is excellently used and furnished, it really looks like a perfect replica of a 1900s manor.

Lighting is another strongpoint in Goetia. It’s wonderfully distributed and used, allowing you to get a good look at an entire room while still making everything gloomy, unsettling. It kind of makes you understand that in Goetia, you’re not a player, but the narrator of a strange story over which you have no control over, and yet, you want to find out everything.

Goetia starts off rather left footed in terms of narration as some of the lines are somewhat clicheic but meant to create a sense of time, space, and obviously an introduction to everything. As you enter one room, then another, look at a few photos, read a few notes, the story is pieced together in a more fluid form, it starts to make sense, it becomes interesting and immersive.

Last but not least, in Goetia you won’t be accompanying a linear story that slowly unravels the plot. Here, you kind of have to work for it. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle to put together and it takes a while to explore and gather them all.
