Parkour is not a new phenomenon anymore, and it has already been exploited in every possible way by the video game industry. However, there are still new ways to approach the subject, especially with enough creativity. Even so, sometimes it’s enough to add a different spin on an idea to get attention, especially if the genre is popular enough.
Get To The Orange Door is a first-person action game with adventure elements and a lot of platforming involved, not to mention a bit of shooting and a couple of puzzles. The goal of each level is to avoid all the traps, defeat all the enemies and overcome all the obstacles in order to get to the orange door at the end. Various puzzles appear along the way as well, although they are not particularly difficult.
Wall-running and double-jumping come in handy too when you need to reach inaccessible places, although it takes a bit of concentration to perform some of the required moves. Enemies are constantly hunting you down as well, so there’s a lot of additional stress on your mind at all times. This is pretty fun if you like a challenge, but some players might find it a bit too difficult sometimes.
The gameplay can be a tad too demanding every now and again, especially when you have to jump, shoot and avoid incoming bullets at the same time. On the other hand, your character can withstand quite a bit of punishment, so you can take a few bullets in stride without too much worry. Falling off the platforms is an instant death, on the other hand, so the platforming part is actually a lot scarier.
Lastly, the graphics are very enjoyable as well, even if the visual style is a bit too simple sometimes. The HUD is integrated into the main character’s weapon, which is a great way to avoid cluttering the screen. The music and the sound effects work together quite nicely as well, so the overall atmosphere is quite memorable in its own way.
In the end, Get To The Orange Door is quite polished and difficult enough to keep you engaged for a few hours. It may not be finished yet, but it’s obvious that the final version is going to be even more polished and enjoyable.
