GearBlocks Demo

GearBlocks is a sandbox game that lets you focus on building contraptions that are purely mechanical. It supplies all the needed parts and then leaves you in a randomly generated world to go about your creative business.

GearBlocks is a project that is coming to life for all those who enjoy manually piecing together a simple or complex mechanism and then taking two steps back to see it in action. It’s for those who have the patience, perseverance and creativity to experiment with ideas, no matter if they’re borderline genius or totally ridiculous.

The game is built to provide a huge space in which you can take tens of components and mash them together on the spot or after a tiresome brainstorming session. GearBlocks provides propeller blades, axles, blocks and plates of various shapes, sizes and materials, as well as gears, lights, motors, seats, sliders and wheels.

Since the game is in its early stages of development, it does lack some core features but if you have some engineering know-how, there’s a lot you can do and not much you can’t.

GearBlocks has a lot going for it. Dropping a short axle on the ground by mistake and not having the proper reflexes to grab it will end up with you watching it roll downhill until it either stops or it’s completely out of the picture. What this means is that the game as a well devised and implemented physics engine that’s just great.

In terms of gameplay, manipulating all the pieces, connecting them and making things work takes a good deal of practice. It’s not difficult though, it’s more on the lines of working with CAD software because you constantly get hints for controls and connecting objects is done using a grid-snap system which works really well.

GearBlocks has a long way to go before it reaches some of its goals, like being able to use your creations to tackle various types of challenges. It is however a totally playable demo with plenty to offer and there is a great deal of possibilities to explore;
