Vampires are a cornerstone in fiction, given the fact that they have been used and reused thousands of times throughout the years. Hollywood brought them back into focus lately as well, although you can also admire them in TV shows and video games. One of the more classic iterations in the genre is Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn, which shared some the credit with Quentin Tarantino as well.
From Dusk Till Dawn is a third-person shooter that takes place after the events from the movie, with the main character being sent to prison for the crimes of his brother. Naturally, the vampires follow him there, by posing as inmates and attempting to overrun the facility. The story starts when Seth Gecko manages to put his hands on a few weapons and, together with the rest of the survivors, begins to slaughter the vampires and escape from prison.
The action is rather slow-paced for a shooter, although things get more interesting as you go along. There are plenty of different weapons to try out and compare, including a taser, pistols, shotguns, and sub-machine guns. Naturally, some of the enemies might require a bit more bullets to put down, although aiming for the head is also a valid strategy.
After you get acquainted with the game and play it for a bit longer, you start to notice some inconveniences, which may or may not force you to lose interest. For starters, the controls are quite jerky and it can be a real pain to aim properly, but you can certainly get past this. On the other hand, the AI is very simple and dysfunctional, which means that the creatures you stumble upon provide you with no challenge whatsoever.
There are also some bugs to watch out for, as well as glitches that can break the game pace from time to time. Fortunately, the graphics look quite good and the environments do bring a bit for the atmosphere from the movie, although they seem a tad repetitive. The same corridors repeat themselves a couple of times in a row just to add a few more minutes of game time, which is annoying and boring in most cases.
All things considered, From Dusk Till Dawn is not really worth a recommendation unless you really want to shoot vampires and you’ve gone through everything else out there. Otherwise, the bad controls and the repetitive/linear gameplay make the experience feel quite pointless.
