Freedom Planet is a classic 2D platformer build and published by a studio named GalaxyTrail. It shows that the golden age of gaming hasn’t been forgotten and that developers still know how to make classic games.
More than 25 years ago players only had a handful of games experience and most of those were classic 2D platformers. You could spot them from a distance because the all used quirky artwork, insane speeds for characters, and they were really difficult to beat. It could take players are really long time to complete a game, but the challenge was more important than the game itself.
GalaxyTrail wanted to replicate that feeling with Freedom Planet and they were successful in their attempt. It’s a complex and fun game, but above all, it’s really difficult. It will punish players for not being good enough, and that’s something that is sorely missing from today’s gaming world, with a few exceptions.
Unfortunately, the demo version doesn’t contain any campaign levels, and we’re only left to play some of the challenges. From what we could gather, a kingdom is taken over by an evil warlord, who also places a puppet on the throne. Two friends, Lilac, and Carol, enlist in the adventure of their lives trying to set things right.
As you can imagine, a 2D platformer means that you’ll be going forward in the levels, defeating enemies, and advancing the plotline. In Freedom Planet, you’ll be using a couple of characters, Lilac, and Carol, who also happen to have various powers, each useful in certain situations.
What’s interesting is that the game looks and feels at times like it’s some sort of Sonic clone, only to remove that feeling a minute later with an insane new level.
The 16-bit graphics are spot on, and developers also added the possibility of seeing the game in full screen, although in might seem weird on a wide screen monitor. The only problem with the game is the level design. It often happens that you pass through areas without knowing that they can be explored much more, as there are no cues to indicate that there’s something more.
