Simple ideas sometimes have the potential to turn into quite the interesting prospects, as long as the underlying concept is fun and can be extrapolated. Hence, you only need a few other elements to make it into a complete game, which means that the fans might have to give up on a couple of things in most cases, such as good graphics or the freedom of choice.
They don’t come any simpler than Fotonica on the other hand, because all you have to do in the game is press a single key and release it every now and again. It doesn’t even need to be a specific key, because any button on your keyboard will do the job. However, even if it’s as uncomplicated as that, you can still lose a few hours playing it, because the mechanics are just so addictive.
In essence, what you have to do is run across a variety of tricky levels. You can only run in a straight line, and there’s barely any environment to talk about, but there are gaps and multiple vertical levels you can run on. As such, you have to time your jumps properly and make it to the end, otherwise you fall into the void and you have to restart the entire thing.
The other goal in the game is to collect pink discs, which count toward your final score. Your speed constantly increases if you manage not to hit any objects, which makes for some very fast-paced sections. A special boost is unlocked every once in a while and you get to run even faster, although it becomes very tricky to time your jumps properly.
As far as the graphics are concerned, all you usually see is a completely black background and the white lines that delimit the track. The simplicity works wonders, however, because it would be very annoying to keep up with the environments at such high speeds. A nice soundtrack keeps you company, and it provides you with the adrenaline boost you need.
All things considered, Fotonica is definitely something new you can try out and it’s highly unlikely that it’s going to disappoint you. Hence, if you need something fun and challenging to play, this may very well be the game to try out.
