Tactics are important in strategy games, but there are other elements that keep the players engaged and the experience feeling fresh. Hence, that’s why games like Heroes of Might and Magic got to be so popular, or other classics like X-COM. Having the freedom to approach each battle in a different way is also important, depending on your units and the situation in question.
Fort Triumph is an upcoming tactical game with interesting gameplay mechanics, in which it’s not enough to have the most powerful heroes. Instead, you have to concentrate on using the environment to your advantage, including crates, trees, or anything else that can deal damage to your enemies. Special abilities and character classes make a difference as well, so it looks like a very promising formula.
The game describes itself as a fantasy X-COM, and it actually feels like that after only a few minutes of gameplay. The focus is clearly on combat, but map exploration and character development are part of the equation too. There’s not a lot of content in the demo at hand, but you can tell that a lot more is on the way, especially terms of world complexion.
Given the fact that the action takes place in turns, the controls are not demanding in terms of speed, since you can take as much time as you need to arrange your units. The game highlights valid moves for every unit under your command, which is both helpful and annoying after a while. It doesn’t take long to learn how everything works, especially when it comes to making use of environmental objects.
As far as the graphics are concerned, the colorful style goes great with the fantasy theme, and you can tell that most environments contain a lot of detail. Every hero is unique as well, and the animations are not too bad either. Even the soundtrack is neat and enjoyable, although it can get repetitive after a while, at least in the demo.
In the end, Fort Triumph is full of good ideas, and they seem to be nicely integrated so far. It’s a great way to rekindle your love for tactical games and strategy, especially since you are free to use whatever approach you wish. Hence, you can support the developers by participating in the game’s Kickstarter campaign.
