It would seem like 16-bit platformers never truly went away, even if they are considered old, retro or classic at this point. There’s something magic about 2D sidescrollers with simple gameplay mechanics, especially if they feature difficult levels and responsive controls. A good story helps a lot with the game’s appeal, but it’s not a huge deal if the plot does not rise to expectations.

Forsaken Castle is a retro action-platformer with 16-bit graphics and snappy controls, in which you play the role of a paladin who goes on a mighty quest to defeat a horde of undead monsters. It doesn’t look all that different from everything else in the genre at first, but it quickly becomes obvious that Forsaken Castle is a lot more polished and enjoyable than most indie productions out there.

To begin with, the level design is a lot more enjoyable, and it truly feels like you are embarking on a quest as soon as the action commences. Your character can jump, attack using her weapon or use one of multiple special abilities, not to mention the fact that each enemy has to be approached differently. Sometimes there are mini-puzzles you have to solve in order to advance through the levels, but the main idea is to keep jumping and work your way around enemies.

To respect the tradition, the game features the occasional boss fight that challenges your reflexes and reaction speed, which is a great way to make players feel like they are making progress. You can also find new items along the way that improve your character, and sometimes they are actually necessary in order to get past certain sections. It’s also worth noting that exploration is a pretty big part of the game, although it’s not obvious from the demo.

Lastly, the graphics are worth a mention as well, because unlike most of the “retro” games released lately, Forsaken Castle actually features good artwork that’s only designed to look old. Hence, while other games use the retro term as an excuse for the lack of talent, this one looks authentic and enjoyable, while still featuring a classic 16-bit color depth. To make things even better, the soundtrack sounds extremely well, even if it’s fairly short in the demo.

Forsaken Castle has all the right elements to become a huge hit, especially if the demo is any indication. The mechanics are polished to a shine and very addictive, the controls are snappy even on the keyboard, and to top things off, the graphics are truly gorgeous. However, the developers need your support in order to get the game out, and you can lend them a hand by participating in their Kickstarter campaign.
