Most RPGs feature a deep storyline and interesting characters to keep the players engaged, since they really have to focus on the role-playing aspect. However, many make the mistake of forcing the players to follow a linear path through the plot, which kind of defeats the purpose. On the other hand, at least you usually have total control over your character’s progress and class abilities.
Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark is a top-down RPG with a focus on tactical battles and character progression, given the fact that it features over twenty classes and more than two hundred abilities to choose from. The combat takes place in turns, which means that you are free to take your time and choose the best approach whenever you enter a battle, as well as position your heroes as you desire.
The story puts you in the role of Arbiter Kyrie, an agent for an organization called the Immortal Council. She is tasked with keeping the peace throughout the realm, which is obviously easier said than done. Over the course of the story you can gather a variety of warriors to fight on your side, each one of whom has unique abilities that come in handy during the battles.
Since the battles are turn-based, it’s important to have all the functions at your disposal and easily accessible. It only takes a few minutes to learn where everything is in the case of Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark, which means that the developers have done a good job in this regard. The character customization seems to run pretty deep, although this is still a demo at this point, which means that not everything is included yet.
As far as the graphics are concerned, the game certainly looks nice, especially thanks to the hand-drawn artwork and the detailed environments you get to explore. Even the cutscenes are nicely edited, even if there are no 3D animations or anything of the sort. A bit more work could go into the sprites and the special effects, but everything seems to be on the right track at the moment.
It’s great to see a combat-oriented RPG nowadays, especially a turn-based one. Hence, Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark should find its share of the market once the game is complete, and the story appears to be quite well-written as well.
