Sacrifice is a common theme in fantasy stories, since that’s how most heroes prove that they are ready to give it all for the greater good. Obviously, sometimes they are brought back with no repercussions, given the fact that it’s a bit of a bummer to kill the good guy at the end of the story. Visual novels are fairly happy most of the time, but every now and again they can be a bit of a downer as well.

Fatal Twelve is a colorful visual novel that puts you in the role of a young girl by the name of Shishimai Rinka, who one day gets into a pretty unpleasant situation. The game is not overly interactive, but it has a pretty cozy atmosphere and an engaging story that catches you in its spell from the first few minutes. The artwork is quite striking and detailed in most scenes.

It all starts with a simple train ride as Rinka is traveling with her friend. As it happens, an explosion is about to rip the train to shreds and hurt Rinka’s friend, which is when she decides to shield her with her own body. Naturally, the explosion kills Rinka, but for some reason she instantly wakes up in her coffee shop a few days later like nothing happened.

Although everything appears to be normal, it doesn’t take long until the opposite is proven to be true. Hence, Rinka starts to see all sorts of weird beings that claim to be goddesses, and she is now part of something called the Divine Selection. This part may be a bit hard to swallow if you like slightly more realistic or relatable stories, but anyone can let their imagination wander for a while.

As far as the artwork is concerned, it’s obvious that the artists are very talented, especially when it comes to character design and the backgrounds. There are quite a few poses and facial expressions for every character, which makes them look more human. The soundtrack is very nice as well, even if it might not stick with you for too long.

In the end, Fatal Twelve is not as original or as intriguing as it could have been, it’s a pleasant experience nonetheless. Thus, this should be the perfect choice for visual novel buffs if you have nothing else on your list.
