RPG lovers are very familiar with dungeons, because there are hardly any games out there that don’t feature at least a handful or dark corridors riddled with monsters. At this point it’s pretty difficult to innovate the concept of a dungeon, but that doesn’t mean developers cannot make them fun. Hence, it’s all about how the rest of the elements work together to create an enjoyable experience.
Fall of Light is a top-down RPG with puzzles and a pretty neat combat system, in which you play the role of a seasoned warrior as he tries to take his daughter to the last place in the world that still sees light. Although it feels pretty simple at first, the game challenges both your mind and your combat prowess, since there are tough puzzles to overcome, as well as difficult battles along the way.
As mentioned before, the story takes place in a world engulfed by darkness, where people are living in fear and monsters roam free. The main character is an old warrior by the name of Nyx, and although he might be retired, he is still able to deal some heavy damage to those who threaten his daughter. You learn a lot about the world by simply exploring, even if the experience is pretty linear most of the time.
The combat is an important aspect of the game, and there’s quite a bit of variety in this regard. Hence, you can make use of almost two dozen battle stances, as well as strike your enemies using either melee or ranged weapons. There’s an inventory screen where you can shuffle through your gear, not to mention the fact that you can also acquire special powers from certain places around the game world.
Lastly, the designers had a tough job in terms of world design, given the fact that the emphasis is on the darkness itself. Hence, even if you are mostly looking at dark environments, they are still very intricate most of the time, not to mention the fact that there are weak light sources along the way too. It’s also worth noting that you really need a gamepad to play the game properly, because the keyboard controls are very counterintuitive and annoying.
Even if Fall of Light appears to be quite dull and slow at first, the action picks up later on, and it’s nice to see a change in scenery. The story is unique as well, especially since you are constantly holding your daughter’s hand throughout the game.
