CRYENGINE technology has given the gaming world accessible means of creating visually stunning pieces of digital art. Some are focused on high doses of weapons combat with ridiculously rich effects, while others take you on a more relaxed journey.
Such an example is FATUM The Will of a God, a game that uses CRYENGINE and takes you into a surreal world where you will have to instinctively explore and figure out the meaning of it all.
For those who have a thing for architecture, real and surreal, FATUM The Will of a God is a game that has plenty to offer. World design doesn’t create emphasis on a predominant element, it’s a mixture of rigid and robust with organic and traces of organized chaos.
Every room you find yourself in follows a certain pattern which is nicely broken by one or several elements, making you ask yourself questions about what it is, how it got there and so on. The environment is meant to create different states, some are well lit and clean, while others have a sinister and uneasy atmosphere but all designed to trigger some kind of feeling in you.
FATUM The Will of a God is by all means a very good looking game but unfortunately it has its downsides. For example, part of the game is to find a series of bunnies which present you with a lesson from different topics, religion, philosophy and so on. The idea is good, but delivery seems to need some work.
In-game music is way above average and really helps to set the mood you would expect in a surreal world. The bad part comes when you find one of the rabbits and the music changes to something you hear in a TV add, and the serious and mysterious nature of the game is replaced with a ‘fun fact’ kind of message.
It doesn’t really make any sense, and it is mostly trivial and general knowledge, but on the other hand, the game does change quite a lot as you progress. Things get a bit more mysterious and those short lessons can be interpreted in an entirely new way.
FATUM The Will of a God aims to present a series of profound questions to its players. Visually, the game is there, but it does need a fair amount of work on storytelling. Luckily, the game, at this time is still in early development so you really should keep an eye out for it.
It has the potential for something great.
