Ethereal Legends Demo
Help an old wizard find his purpose in life in this gorgeous role-playing game with a unique combat system. #Turn-based combat #Role-playing game #Dungeon crawler #Wizard #Turn-based #Role-play
Role-playing games have always been rather difficult to pull off properly, because they require a special blend of story, gameplay and graphics appeal to the fans of the genre. While it is true that the story is the most important part, hence the ‘role-play’, the illusion shatters if it’s a bother to actually play the game and fight enemies. In the same regard, the world must look inviting as well, otherwise exploration is dull.
Ethereal Legends is a role-playing game that tries to include a couple of new elements and prove to gamers that it’s possible to have something else in the genre as well. As such, the game’s greatest attraction seems to be the active turn-based combat system, which is indeed quite the confusing term. What it means is that each character takes its turn to make a move, but there is no actual pause like in classic RPGs using this method.
Story-wise, it’s a bit too early to tell whether there’s something here or not. You play the role of a wizard, who’s apparently looking for his purpose in life. His journey takes you through a variety of interesting locations, including perilous dungeons populated by the usual trolls and dragons. Not a lot of information is provided on the rest of the characters joining you, but it’s a bit irrelevant at this point anyway.
Although it tries really hard to look and feel like something else, the combat system is very similar to what you might have seen in the Final Fantasy series. When a character gets to make a move, he is allowed to either strike using his weapon, cast a special or use an item from the inventory. You have to do it quickly, though, because the fight doesn’t stop while you think.
Lastly, the game uses Unreal Engine 4 as its graphics engine, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it looks phenomenal. VR support is included with the demo, but you need to be prepared to deal with some issues. In fact, the vanilla version is pretty buggy as well, which is the cost of doing business if you are willing to test an Alpha version of the game.
Lastly, while Ethereal Legends is obviously just a small part of the full game, it still feels very restrictive and linear. Sure, the surrounding areas are mesmerizing, but it’s frustrating to only have one path you can follow throughout the level. We can only hope that it’ll get better later in the development process.
