It shouldn’t be a surprise that Valve’s Portal has managed to inspire so many developers to create something similar, because the game is incredibly versatile and full of concepts that can be transposed into different forms. Thus, there are a lot of first-person puzzle games out there nowadays, and quite a few of them use cubes in one way or another.
Enigma Prison is a first-person puzzle game in which you have to navigate interesting levels full of obstacles and use a variety of gadgets in order to solve puzzles and make your way forward. There’s not much of a story to get your imagination going, but then again you’ll be too busy trying to figure out how to advance that you won’t have time to focus on a story anyway.
As for the actual gameplay, you play as someone who must use gadgets in order to make it past all sorts of tricky rooms full of obstacles. These gadgets include a cube gun, which allows you to shoot cubes and build new platforms to get over obstacles, as well as a teleport tool, which can be used to jump between certain checkpoints in the blink of an eye.
Unfortunately, it can be rather difficult to understand how everything works in the beginning, and this is because the game fails to explain anything properly. Granted, there are in-game stations that theoretically show you what you have to do, but even these are vague for some reason. It’s alright for the actual puzzles to be difficult and annoying, but it’s not at all alright to be confused by the tutorial.
As far as the graphics are concerned, on the other hand, the game must be commended for its smooth environments and great post-processing effects. Naturally, most of these are just native capabilities of the Unreal Engine 4, but the level design itself is pretty engaging nonetheless. Not much can be said about the soundtrack, unfortunately, and it’s a pretty important chapter when there’s no real story to distract you.
In the end, Enigma Prison appears to be quite polished and enjoyable, not to mention difficult, which is a good thing to see in a puzzle game. Even so, it needs a bit of work when it comes to the tutorial and the general presentation.
