Steampunk stories involve all sorts of diesel or gear-powered machinery that somehow works like modern technology, even if common sense dictates otherwise. However, this machinery is certainly beautiful, thanks to the Victorian-inspired designs and the attention to detail. In fact, the looks are what define steampunk the most, because everything else depends on your ability to turn a blind eye.

Empyrean is a text-based role-playing game in which you get to be a part of a steampunk world and control almost everything about how the story evolves along the way. The goal is to mold your character as you wish and make the desired decisions as the story progresses, which allows you to see a variety of different endings, or even witness different outcomes during the plot.

The action takes place in a strange world rules by steampunk technology, where a man controls everything thanks to his fighter planes powered by Deep Tech, which is a combination of creatures and plants that appear to be mechanical. Naturally, his rule is rather tyrannical, which is why you, his son, must find a way to bring him down using his own airplanes.

Each scene contains some kind of choice, and the story follows a specific path depending on which one you make. Thus, you are free to re-play the game and do different choices, as well as customize your character in a variety of ways. There are even a couple of action scenes that require you to make important decisions in order to assure the survival of your character.

Unfortunately, the game’s biggest drawback is the fact that it doesn’t feature any graphics, so you are forced to imagine everything yourself. This is not necessarily a problem, but modern gamers may not like the idea very much. On top of that, there’s no soundtrack or voice acting either, but this problem is easier to solve by simply playing the desired music in the background.

In conclusion, Empyrean is all about the story, since there’s nothing else to it. However, the fact that you are free to make the desired choices and re-play the adventure many times is also a great selling point, especially if you are not afraid to put your mind to work.
