Empire: Total War is the first game in the Total War series that introduced proper naval warfare, and players get a chance to try this type of gameplay in the provided demo.
The Total War series from The Creative Assembly has been around for a long time, but not until the launch of Empire: Total War did we get to fight some proper maritime battles. These were present in earlier games, but they were only simulated and they often just required more ships than the enemy.
Empire: Total War completely changed the way these games were designed and users were given much more control. The simulation covers pretty much all of the major conflicts of the nineteenth century, including the revolutionary war between the United States and the British Empire. The demo itself it not all big, as it only provides access to two different battles, one on land and one at sea.
The biggest flaw, if we can call it that, of the Total War series was the fact that the AI was weak and usually predictable. We already know what’s going to do, if it only has a few options, and there is not a lot of wiggle room.
Empire: Total War is not much different, but we have noticed that at least the battles in the demo are much more challenging than we would have expected. The AI wasn’t as courageous as before and waited for us to make the first move. It starts as a battle of attrition for both parties, and it can take a long time to finish it, especially at normal speed.
The graphics are still up to par with today’s standards, even of this game is not exactly new. The framerate is very good, even on middle-end hardware, which is very good news for all real-time strategy fans.
The game is not without its problems. Users might encounter various crashes, especially when changing the settings, so make sure that save often. It’s a pretty interesting experience, and it’s worth the 2GB installation space it requires.
