Platformers are usually designed to be as challenging as possible, because gamers enjoy having to struggle with impossible jumps and tricky levels. However, the mechanics are very important in the genre, given the fact that there’s nothing more frustrating than losing because the mechanics are faulty or the controls are not smooth enough to keep up with your input.
Eat All The Things is a fast-paced platformer with three-dimensional environments and a top-down perspective, in which your main objectives are to eat as much food as you can find and avoid the enemies that defend it. Unlike most platformers, the perspective in Eat All The Things makes things a tad more difficult, especially since you cannot really judge distances properly.
The main character is a guy who loves food so much he has decided to dress himself up as a donut, which should speak volumes on his dedication. However, the food he is after belongs to someone else, and they are always trying to stop you from stealing it. Hence, they use things called Watcher Surveillance Systems to keep watch on their food and attack any enemy on sight.
As mentioned before, the platforming is fairly tricky, but the weird perspective makes it even more challenging. Thus, it’s sometimes really difficult to figure out how to jump to the next platform, because the camera position makes it impossible to judge distances properly. There are all sorts of traps and enemies that can instantly end your progress if you make the wrong moves.
The controls are quite responsive and smooth, on the other hand, even if the main character slows down the more he eats. Since all you can do is walk around and jump, it should be easy for everyone to learn the basics, although the difficulty curve is quite daunting sometimes in terms of platforming. The graphics are very colorful and enjoyable, and the world design is unique as well.
In the end, Eat All The Things has its flaws at the moment, but then again this is a Pre-Alpha build that’s only meant to show you the general idea of the game. Thus, it should get a lot better in the future, and you can lend the developers a hand by participating in their Kickstarter campaign.
