Space shmups are not insanely popular nowadays, and they never have been the kind of games that attract millions of players at a launch party. However, it’s worth noting that the genre has been around for a few decades now, so it certainly has a steady fan base that allows developers to keep making games and not worry about sales, at least if the games in question are worth it.
ESCHATOS is a classic shoot ‘em up in which you have to destroy hundreds of enemies per minute and survive the cacophony of lasers and projectiles coming your way at the same time. You can pick up power-ups and improve your weapons along the way, not to mention the fact that each kill contributes to your overall score, which can be compared to that of other people around the world.
As for the story, it all starts when the Moon is starting to turn purple for some reason. Naturally, it turns out that aliens are to blame for this, and they were actually planning a full-scale invasion. Your role is to defeat the alien forces and defend Earth from destruction, which means that you fight alone against the entire fleet, although at least you have a pretty powerful spaceship.
You can use many types of weapons, including long-range and short-range ones, depending on what you are going up against. Shields are part of the equation as well, although you need to be careful when and how you use them. Moreover, power-ups make things even more interesting, especially since they change the properties of your weapons and allow you to deal a lot more damage.
As for the graphics, they are a combination of modern and retro elements, which means that it looks pretty modest for a new game. However, there are a few interesting landscapes along the way, and the spaceships you go head-to-head against come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well. The soundtrack is great and it goes very well with the action on the screen.
All things considered, ESCHATOS has what it takes to keep you entertained for a few hours, not to mention the fact that you can participate in challenges and compete with other players from all over the world for the high score.
