Music is the kind of subject that needs to be handled with heavy-duty gloves, because most people do not react very well when their preferences are being attacked. Dubstep is part of a rather new electronica current, driven by deep bass lines, mechanical sounds, and plenty of noise to fill in the gaps. Just like every other genre, it has supporters and opposers, who prefer to fight instead of pursuing their own passions.
DubWars is a rather unique video game, because it uses very interesting gameplay mechanics to provide you with a different kind of experience. At a first glance, it looks just like any other top-down arcade shooters, with colorful levels, lasers, and clusters of enemies attacking you every other nanosecond. Once you put the headphones on, however, you realize it is much more than just that.
For starters, you cannot shoot your weapons manually, they automatically go off depending on the rhythm of the dubstep song playing in the background. All you have to do is survive the constant waves of enemies, by moving around and avoiding to crash into them. As the bass drops and the effects start getting more intense, so do your weapons, because they morph into powerful laser beams, energy pulses, and so on.
It is also possible to pick up power-ups, in order to enhance your weapons and make your life easier. While the regular enemies are not very dangerous, there are also bosses to watch out for, which can be quite tricky to deal with if you are not properly prepared. The difficulty level has a significant impact on the gameplay as well, because it influences the number of foes coming at you, as well as their toughness.
To make matters more interesting, the visuals are very colorful and mesmerizing, with plenty of special effects, explosions, and light beams. However, the game is still in two dimensions, so do not expect anything too great when it comes to ship modelling. The artwork is pleasant, however, so there’s certainly no need for billions of polygons in order to admire the view.
In the end, regardless of how fun and ingenious DubWars might be, the truth is that the gimmick gets old quite fast. Once you have seen and listened to all the levels, there’s very little incentive to go back and do it again, because nothing really changes. Hence, you might want to think about whether you are comfortable with that, before spending money on it.
