Drox Operative Demo

The action-RPG genre - or hack & slash how it is also known - features a bunch of standard mechanics that are reused in mostly every game that decides to join the genre. Sure, the theme, the characters, and the world might change, but the underlying concepts are always the same, regardless of whether you are clearing alien bases, or burning orc camps.

Drox Operative is a combat-oriented role-playing game set in space, in which you control a powerful alien operative and you must do everything in your power to leave a mark on the galaxy. In essence, the actual gameplay is no different from what you might have seen in Dungeon Siege or Diablo, but the mechanics are slightly different and there are some unique aspects to take into consideration as well.

Story-wise, everything revolves around an ancient race of aliens that once ruled the entire galaxy, thanks to a powerful organization of highly-trained operatives they created. After a while, these operatives rebelled against their masters and, soon enough enough, the entire race went extinct. Most of the operatives remained, however, which means that they now act as mercenaries for the other races.

Other than the fact you are piloting a ship around instead of a barbarian with dual-wielding warhammers, the gameplay is mostly the same, because you must constantly clear level after level and kill everything that stands in your way. A lot of loot is involved as well, because the game allows you to upgrade your spaceship with new parts and make it more resilient.

Choice is also a big part of the experience, seeing as you are free to choose your side and drive the story wherever you feel like going. Don’t expect a lot of depth, on the other hand, because the plot is nothing the type that changes lives and there are barely any memorable characters to meet throughout the game anyway. Even so, it’s nice to know you can influence the course of the story if you feel like it.

Even if the game is not exactly worthy of a place in the hall of fame, Drox Operative is certainly a must-try for anyone who’s a fan of hack-and-slash. There’s enough loot to keep you busy for days at end, while the gameplay in general is tons of fun, as long as you can stomach a bit of repetition.
