Retro games can still have tremendous success if they are designed right, and there are many examples of that on the market at the moment. However, it’s only natural that not everyone is going to dig the poor graphics, given the fact that modern gamers are used to 4K resolutions and smooth 3D models. Even so, the right idea can attract millions of fans and decent profits.
Death's Hangover is a breakout game with a twist, in which your goal is to explore levels and survive a wide variety of dangers. The mechanics are very similar to your regular ball and bat game, but there are differences, some of which make the experience feel quite unique. Hence, you can acquire power-ups, engage in boss fights, as well as put your reflexes to the test.
The whole thing revolves around the Grim Reaper, who happens to get very drunk one night and wake up with a terrible hangover. Not only that, but it would appear that Dracula has stolen his treasured souls, which prompts a mission to get them back. To do so, Death calls upon two great warriors and sends them hunting for the souls in order to recover them.
Although you can stay and try to destroy all the blocks, the main goal is to make it to the exit, which means that you must direct the ball toward the door. However, there are all sorts of enemies trying to keep you from achieving that, including boss fights that force you to concentrate and make the most out of your reflexes. Thankfully, it’s also possible to acquire power-ups and use them to gain the upper hand.
These power-ups can even be upgraded along the way, so that they get even more powerful. Your skill is still the most important aspect, on the other hand, because it doesn’t really matter how much of an advantage you’ve got if you are too slow to react. The enemies get faster and more numerous later on, making it that much more difficult.
In the end, Death's Hangover comes with enough interesting features to keep you engaged for a few hours, as well as a pretty high difficulty level. Thus, it should be the perfect nostalgia cure if you have a soft spot for Breakout clones.
