In the Greek and Roman mythologies, gods are portrayed as pretty flawed creatures, even if they are powerful. They make mistakes and say the wrong things sometimes, although they can solve their problems using lightning bolts. Video games take inspirations from a variety of sources, and it’s nice to see something different for a change.
Deathless: The City's Thirst is an interactive novel that allows you to make up the story as you go, albeit with a few guidelines and directions. Dialog is an important part of the gameplay, and you’re not always obligated to do the right thing. It all depends on how you want to play things out, since each choice you make affects the story and the characters in the long run.
Story-wise, the game takes place in the Craftverse, so it’s definitely a help if you are familiar with any other novels written by the same author. In essence, you play the role of a god that has won the God Wars by defeating the god of rain. However, the city you now hold dominion over lacks water, as you might expect, so the story revolves around the things you have to do in order to provide the people with water.
Dialog is a huge part of the gameplay, because almost every character has something to say to you. Some of the choices you have to make are taken outside the dialog, such as when you have to decide whether to do one thing or the other, but talking is the main course on the menu. There are many characters to interact with, and they remember everything you say to them. Depending on how you want to build your character, each choice has an effect later on.
Naturally, there are multiple endings you can reach, depending on the rest of the story. Thanks to this, you have the freedom to replay the game multiple times and see different outcomes, as long as you have the patience for it. Given the fact that there are no graphics or a soundtrack, you might be forced to improvise something yourself, but it shouldn’t be a problem as long as you like reading.
Deathless: The City's Thirst is for those who love reading, because there’s not much else going on. The rush you feel making decisions that affect the game’s world and the characters should be enough to keep you entertained, and it helps that you can easily finish the story in a few hours.
