Become a death god's apprentice and earn your degree by collecting souls from various villains. #Death God University #Puzzle game #Adventure game #God #Apprentice #Adventure
Evil may seem like an easy choice, because it only takes effort and dedication to do good things. However, if you really want to distinguish yourself as a bad guy, you have to put some work into the atrocities you commit. As such, clever villains always come up with the most inventive and maybe needlessly complicated plans, which is probably why they fail so often.
DGU is a simple third-person adventure game with puzzle elements, in which you have to play the role of a bad guy for a change. In essence, the goal is to prove that you are capable of despicable things, by messing with people and collecting their souls after their deaths. The game has its fair share of bugs and issues, but as long as the developers keep fixing them, it should turn into quite a fun adventure.
To begin with, it is worth noting that the gameplay and the general idea of the game are rather interesting and engaging. You can freely explore the environments as you see fit, and it's definitely a lot of fun to set up traps and watch your targets fall for them. Every map and location holds plenty of interesting possibilities, so you probably won’t run out of things to do too quickly.
The third-person perspective makes exploration pleasant, but your range of motions is rather limited. It just feels like you cannot do much more than simply walk around and pressing a key whenever interaction is possible. Given the fact that the maps are quite big, and you have to keep moving from objective to objective on a regular basis, it can become repetitive and boring. On top of all that, there are some camera issues you have to deal with as well.
Speaking of which, the general technical side of the game is far from perfect. While the graphics look pretty nice and detailed, there are performance spikes and framerate drops on a regular basis, not to mention the crashes. Some of these problems were fixed with patches, but not all of them. The sound quality is laughable as well, which is quite a shame really, because the game would have been a lot more fun with a proper soundtrack.
All things considered, DGU kind of wasted its potential, and it had a lot to begin with. This looks, plays and is marketed like a game for the masses, but the inhuman system requirements make it rather difficult to believe that casual players will be able to enjoy it at all.
