From time to time, a game is able to revolutionize its genre and set new standards, by bringing something special to the table. When that happens, everything that comes after it must adhere to the same standards in order to receive the same amount of praise, and that is basically how everything works in the gaming industry.

One of the best examples of such a revolution is Crysis, which brought major gameplay and graphic advancements to the FPS genre and established itself as one of the best shooters ever released. To start off with, one of the most ingenious additions is the nanosuit, which is what your character and his team are wearing in order to improve their fighting abilities and become the ultimate soldiers.

In essence, the suit basically gives you superpowers, but in short bursts that must be carefully used in the right circumstances. Hence, it allows you to blend in with the environment and become invisible, move very fast across the battlefield and even a few seconds of superhuman strength, which enables you to flip vehicles and jump much higher than usual.

All of this takes place on a tropical island in the middle of the ocean, where you and your team are dropped for a secret mission. Naturally, something goes wrong and some of your comrades stop responding, meaning that you must go after them and find out what happened. Later in the game, you also get the chance to fight aliens and visit strange spaceships, which somehow integrates with the overall story and the Koreans you shoot throughout the first few hours of gameplay.

Another aspect that makes Crysis shine is its graphic engine, which, at the of its release, had no rival. It was also among the first games to use the power of DirectX 10, which allowed for much better special effects and various other enhancements to give it a more realistic feel. The environment is also almost fully destructible, since every tree can be put down with a few well-placed bullets.

The rest of the game is also very well polished, especially when it comes to the amazing cutscenes created with the same CryEngine graphics and the professional voice acting which gives life to the characters. The AI, on the other hand, is not that bright, although you can improve it slightly by raising the difficulty level.

In the end, Crysis must be awarded respect it deserves, since it managed to achieve many great things at once. Thus, despite the fact that it could have worked a bit more on the AI and the story line, the game is still a strong name on the list of the best shooters ever name.
