The Colin McRae Rally series has a long history of successful titles released under its name over the years, most of which have redefined the genre and allowed the franchise to established itself as the undefeated champion in the category. This latest title, on the other hand, doesn't manage to bring enough improvements to qualify for the prize, unfortunately.
After Colin McRae Rally 2004 has blown away the industry with its revolutionary graphics and realistic depiction of the sport, the next installment was expected to be even greater than that. The 2005 installment, unfortunately, does not manage to accomplish the same thing, since it brought way too few modifications to even be considered a true sequel.
Right from the bat, you can observe the fact that most of the tracks are the same as they were before, which could be called normal, since rallies always take place in the same countries and on similar tracks. However, the lack of more game modes is quite disappointing, especially since the previous title featured a lot of original content.
As a consolation, a bunch of new cars have been added to the line-up, each one of which is as nicely modeled and textured as the rest of the vehicles, which have been imported into this episode as well. Thus, depending on your preferences, both the 2WD and the 4WD section have received new car additions you can use in tournaments and various other challenges.
Graphic-wise, there are barely any modifications, although it is worth noting that the game still looks amazing even with minimal improvements over the course of the year. It could have, however, used a bit of refinement when it comes to the environment, because most of the trees are still kind of an eye sore, especially when viewed next to the cars.
In the end, if you do not own any Colin McRae Rally titles, then you can definitely go for the 2005 episode. Otherwise, if you already have the 2004 installment, there is no good reason to switch, since they are basically the same games, with minor differences.
