The second World War II is definitely one of the most overused subjects when it comes to movies and video games, given the fact that it served as the central idea for countless flicks and adaptations. However, if the other elements are strong enough on their own, it doesn’t really matter what the theme is, as long as you can enjoy a fruitful experience with the game in question.

Codename Eagle did not really manage to impress anyone at the time of its release, mainly because it tried a subtle approach to the FPS genre, by employing some very shaky stealth mechanics. Naturally, the entire thing felt unpolished and unfinished, which meant that neither the stealth gimmicks, nor the classic FPS mechanics worked like they should have.

The multiplayer mode somehow managed to rise above the singleplayer component, probably because stealth is neither indicated, nor possible during deathmatch, so only the shooter part was required to make the experience worthwhile. Hence, with only Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch and the classic Deathmatch, the multiplayer is about as regular as it gets in the genre.

When it comes to the arsenal that’s available during the matches, you can rest assured that all the tools of the trade are right where they should be. Pistols, rifles and the necessary sniper rifles come in different shapes and sizes, although don’t expect a dizzying variety. Grenades can obviously be used as well, together with other small gimmicks that may come in handy.

As you might expect, the visual style is the same as it is in the rest of the game, so don’t hope for anything different for the multiplayer. The maps are not exactly groundbreaking, nor do they exhibit too much detail, but the level design is acceptable and some interesting matches can take place on them. Obviously, their layout and design depends on the chosen mode, so that they are balanced no matter what the end goal is for every player.

When it’s all said and done, there was little chance for the multiplayer component of Codename Eagle to be exceedingly better than the rest of the game. However, for what it’s worth, it certainly manages to create a cozy environment for a friendly shootout, although the poor gameplay decisions don’t allow you to enjoy too many matches in a row.
