RPGs are still popular with gamers nowadays, and they are certainly not in low supply. Some of the biggest studios out there are constantly developing new games in the genre, including Bethesda, Ubisoft, CD Projekt and Bioware. However, the trend has been obvious in the last couple of years, since everyone has abandoned the top-down view for a more personal first/third-person perspective.
Champions of Anteria tries to stick to the basics and innovate certain elements at the same time, which makes the experience quite engaging and interesting to say the least. Hence, it’s a tactical RPG played from a top-down view, in which you also get the chance to do some city building and even craft items to help with the war effort. It may sound complicated and unforgiving, but the actual game is anything but that.
One-half of the game feels and plays like a classic RPG, which means that you have a party of heroes that must be used as efficiently as possible to defeat enemies in combat. You can only have three champions in the group at the same time, which is a bit of a bummer, but then again the tactics are much more hands on as well. Thus, it’s all about the right combination of elements you use, because there are five of them, and each enemy is either resistant or vulnerable to a specific element.
The story revolves around the great kingdom of Anteria and the fact that it’s practically in ruins, given the fact that rival clans are constantly fighting. On top of that, an evil wizard has raised an undead army and desires to destroy what’s left of the kingdom, which is why you must lead a party of champions to victory and restore Anteria to its former glory. In order to do that, you have the opportunity to be in charge of a stronghold and make use of its resources.
As such, the other half of the game has you managing a village and building all sorts of facilities to help it thrive. These facilities can then be used to craft useful potions and items for your heroes, not to mention fortifications against enemy assaults. Thus, you jump from city building to RPG in a matter of seconds, and it actually feels very engaging, despite the gap between the genres.
All things considered, Champions of Anteria is a very promising game, even if only a tiny portion of it is available in the demo. The mechanics feel polished, the combat is challenging and rewarding, and the city building is intriguing. On top of all that, the boss fights should be a blast to tackle.
