There are thousands of gods and myths about them all over the world, many of which are just relics of the past with no followers anymore. On the other hand, the concepts are still reimagined every now and again in modern movies and video games, especially in the case of popular gods like the Norse or the Greek ones. Thus, there are always new ideas that can be extracted with enough creativity.

Champion of the Gods is a text-based adventure game in which you get to play a role in a riveting tale about gods, humans and war. Since the game is designed to provide you with maximum freedom, the story can take a variety of paths on its way to conclusion, and it can also end more than one way, depending on the decisions you take as you interact with other characters.

In essence, you can pretty much create and customize your character as you see fit in the beginning, including things like gender, sexual orientation and a bit of childhood history. However, many character traits are actually decided as you go along, mainly through the choices you make. Combat plays a pretty important role in the grand scheme of things as well, although the text-based interface is far from riveting.

As mentioned before, the conflict between humans and gods is pretty interesting, but there are other creatures you have to keep an eye on as well. You can pick a side and play your cards in accordance, regardless of whether you decide to support the gods and get gifts for them, or defy their godliness and focus on helping the people regain some of their freedom and independence.

There is romance involved in the story as well, but then again you are not forced to follow any of these subplots. You can choose multiple characters to pursue along the way, although your decisions may affect their opinion of you. Since there are no graphics to speak of, most of the time you have to rely on your imagination to do the trick, which shouldn’t be a problem if you are an avid reader.

Champion of the Gods is more than capable of keeping you busy for a few hours, especially if you are a fan of Greek mythology and you enjoy reading. The plethora of options and endings extend the experience even more.
