Cell HD: emergence Demo

Cell HD: emergence is a strange arcade shooter that allows users to control a nanite as it’s fighting infections and other diseases.

It was just a matter of time until some developer figured out that controlling miniature robots that are small enough to repair human cells might just make the perfect subject for a game. In Cell HD: emergence you don’t control a hoard of this robots, just a single one that’s been sent to prevent a disease to spread.

The idea itself is pretty cool, and it’s generic enough that it could work even without the story itself. In the case of Cell HD: emergence the story is a minimal excuse for what is happening, but it works really well. It would be nice to say that it has been done before, but Cell HD: emergence is rather interesting and unique.

The player controls a single nanite that needs to keep an infection under control. It’s small enough to work inside cells, and it uses an interesting voxel-based engine that renders everything in some sort of big 3D pixels.

The first levels are easy to play, but players soon find that the disease advances quickly and that fast reaction are needed to survive. You can’t hang around for a long time until you decide to shoot your chemical weapon at the infection.

The demo isn’t long enough, but the developers explain that eventually you will be able to build defenses against the infection, to shoot really powerful weapons, and even confront other nanites that are trying to hard the organism.

The cherry on top is that the nanite receives orders that are spoken in a robotic voice, which somehow adds to the overall feeling for Cell HD: emergence.

Since this a voxel based engine, the game runs really well even on computers with low-end hardware. Also, the demo is rather short, and it’s might not be representative of all the things that you can do with the full release.

Cell HD: emergence is a unique and interesting game, with nothing that even comes close regarding concept.
